This Merina proverb expresses the futility of asking for commitments or promises from someone who is incapable of fulfilling them. Just as it would be impossible and nonsensical to ask a dead person for fire, it is equally futile to ask for commitments from someone who cannot uphold them. An equivalent English proverb is ‘Promising the impossible’ or ‘Asking for the moon’.
